Check your lights first
Before putting anything up, check your Christmas lights carefully.

- Damaged bulbs

Don't use lights that are damaged.

You might be tempted to simply drape the lights over the guttering or wedge the cable underneath the edge.
It's better to use purpose-made Christmas light clips or gutter clips.
These are designed to hold the lights securely without damaging the guttering.
They can usually be attached at regular intervals, creating a neat and even line.
Never drill into your guttering just to attach Christmas lights.
There's absolutely no need.
💡 Keep Cables Away From Water
Outdoor electrical connections need particular care.
Try to position connections somewhere protected from rain and make sure cables aren't sitting in standing water.
Don't overload electrical sockets or extension leads.
If you're using extension leads outdoors, make sure they're suitable for outdoor use and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
If you're unsure about the electrical side of your installation, get advice from a suitably qualified electrician.

2. Test the lights
Test them before you put them up.
There's nothing more frustrating than spending an hour carefully installing lights only to discover that half of them don't work.
3. Plan where the power connection will be
Work out where the cable will start and where it will connect to your power supply.
Don't leave this until the end.
4. Position your ladder safely
Move the ladder rather than stretching too far sideways.
It might take longer, but it's considerably safer.
5. Attach the clips
Fit your gutter clips at regular intervals.
Don't rely on one clip every few metres.
6. Attach the lights
Work along the guttering, securing the lights as you go.
Try to maintain an even spacing so the finished display looks neat.
7. Step back and check your work
Once everything is installed, stand back and look at the display from the road.
You might spot a section that needs adjusting.
❄️ What About Christmas Lights on Gutters During Bad Weather?
This is something people often forget.
Christmas in North Yorkshire can bring wind, rain, frost and occasionally snow, so your installation needs to be secure enough to cope with the weather.
Don't attach lights so tightly that the cables are under unnecessary tension.
At the same time, don't leave huge loops of cable hanging down where they can catch the wind.
After particularly strong winds, it's sensible to have a quick look at the installation and make sure nothing has come loose.
